Overview: The City of Monrovia prides itself on providing a premier quality of life for its community. The Monrovia Public Library, a division of the Public Services Department, emphasizes excellent customer service and teamwork in its staff and volunteers. Interns are offered opportunities to learn more about serving the public, growing professional skills, and working as a team. 

Project Description 

The Monrovia Public Library is committed to providing the highest quality of service to the community. In meeting this commitment, employees are expected to be knowledgeable, competent, dependable and courteous in the performance of their job responsibilities, and to work cooperatively as part of a team.

Essential Duties: Under the direct supervision of a librarian supervisor, the intern may perform any or all of the following duties:

  • assist adults, young adults, and children in the location of information and materials
  • help with basic use of the library’s online catalog, internet, and electronic databases
  • assist with processing of library materials for inclusion in the collection
  • assist with programs and events that promote library services to individuals and groups
  • perform simple mending of library materials
  • represent the library in informational, educational, and cultural activities in the community
  • assist with patron holds, book returns, sorting and re-shelving library materials
  • prepare statistical reports and assist with writing work procedures
  • assist with basic cataloging and verification of bibliographic records
  • perform paraprofessional tasks and other duties as assigned

2 interns

Required: Completion of LIB 101 Introduction to Library Services for Paraprofessionals and LIB 104 Technical Services: Acquisitions and Collection Development.

Recommended: Completion of LIB 105A Descriptive Cataloging.

HOURS AVAILABLE

Schedule: Interns will be required to work schedules that include days, evenings and weekends.

The Library will make every effort to work around an intern’s school schedule, although such accommodations cannot be guaranteed. An intern can only work during regular staff hours to ensure proper supervision and the opportunity to assist with a variety of duties to maximize the learning experience. 

The regular staff hours are as follows-

Monday-Wednesday 9am-8pm

Thursday & Friday 9am-6pm

Saturday 12-5pm

Sunday CLOSED
