Using Generative AI (GenAI) for Research

About This Guide

While attending Pasadena City College, you will take on the role of researcher for your course papers and projects. As a researcher, you are responsible for selecting appropriate methods, tools, and sources to produce original work that is ethically sound.

Generative AI (GenAI) technologies can be useful tools for academic research, but it is important to understand their limitations and ethical issues before incorporating them into your research process.

Before using generative AI tools for course assignments, consult your instructor’s AI policy. If GenAI use is permissible, this guide will help you think through whether and how to incorporate it into your research. This guide focuses on text-generating generative AI tools, commonly referred to as chatbots, such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini.

Questions to Consider

This guide will help you determine whether and how to incorporate generative AI into your research by providing information that addresses the following questions:

  • How do generative AI tools work?
  • What potential risks and ethical issues should I consider before using generative AI tools?
  • How can I use generative AI tools for academic research?
  • What skills do I need to effectively use generative AI tools for academic research?
  • Which generative AI tools have academic research applications?

If you have any additional questions, Pasadena City College librarians are always happy to provide research assistance through our chat and reference desk services, as well as individual or group research appointments.
